The Value of Giving Up Gaza

Commenter Sparrow at Captain's Quarters had this to say about giving up Gaza:

I favored Gaza disengagement, but at this point I'm ready to see Netanyahu brought back.
The Gaza retreat did something very important for Israelis. It united them.

Update: 05 Aug '06 1932z

A commenter brought up the point of the cost. I discussed that (it broke my heart) and made predictions a year ago.

Dear M. Simon:

All but the settler's. And, it cost Bibi real power.

While I think Bibi may have stumbled upon what happened to Arik Sharon. Who had been cast aside, after 1967, by labor, when Golda Meir said "he's not one of us."

In 1973 labor would have been Kaput. But it wasn't immediate. First Arik Sharon tried his hand at forming a new party, Shlomzion. The voters gave him 2 seats. Then, he went to Begin, (an old rascal if there ever was one); and he talked Begin into "Likud." Then? Move dates forward, and you see Likudniks tried to turn Sharon into a sock puppet.

Now? Yes, Israel has unity. But Gaza caused a rift, as much as an opportunity. You know, I think Sharon understood that Gaza would lob dreck at Sderot. He was prepared. Lebanon? Now, just a military bonus thrown into the mix. But Iran's a real menace. And, lebanon, in bed with iran, like the french were with the germans, need to get whalloped so hard their heads stink worse than their cheeses.

Olmert has a political death wish with his "convergence." But we have to wait and see. CAROL HERMAN

Nice to see we were on the same page on the Gaza withdrawal. I recall feeling like a voice crying in the wilderness in my support for it.

Sharon counted on the heedless bloodlust of the Pals and they didn't let him down. It drove a stake through the heart of 'land for peace.' And then Hez volunteered to chop off its head and stuff garlic in its mouth. Even the Four Mothers have now been mugged by reality.
