Be Careful Out There

The Economist has an article up which is basically a long apologia for Dominique Strauss-Kahn based on the superior European attitudes towards sex. As those of you who read here often may know I'm somewhat of a libertine by American standards. None the less I thought a warning for our European friends was in order. Not about culture but about dangers in the real world. And for those of you ready to scream at me at the drop of a hat let me say here and now that my remarks were somewhat tongue in cheek. I was tweaking the Economist author.

Are you Economist folks aware that the maid in question may have had AIDS? But I will pander to your European superior attitudes on sex:

AIDS is why it is unwise to rape strangers.

Going Against The Grain

Gillette is launching a sales campaign in the Arabian Peninsula to push its Fusion Power Razor.

Well, he seems sold, but isn't this kind of like selling snow to Eskimos? How many of those folks shave?

A Change in Strategy

I have been giving the war a lot of thought. Progress is coming in Iraq a painful inch at a time. It is a process which will not be done again for a while.

So as much as I think Democracy Promotion should still be a major part of our strategy, for the time being it cannot be primary. Our primary focus needs to be on the clash of cultures. To win that clash the West needs more exposure in the East. How do you get it? Television, radio, cell phones, and the 'Net. And what is the #1 requirement for those bits of equipment? Electricity. Even the advance of cell phones requires electricity for the towers and rechargers.

Electricity and street lights do quite a lot to reduce crime at night. Making people feel more secure and in fact be more secure. Lights in the home. Lights in the street.
