Israel is not taking Obama's Middle East Speech well.

When reached via cell phone immediately after President Obama’s speech urging a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's spokesman Mark Regev sounded as though he had been slapped in the face.

Netanyahu swiftly rejected Obama's call for Israel to pull back to the borders that existed before the 1967 Six-Day War. Roughly translated from Hebrew, a statement from the Prime Minister’s office said that they appreciated Obama's commitment to peace, but called the pullback to the 1967 borders "indefensible," and said that the Palestinians were less than an honest partner in the peace process.

Obama not honest? Really? Who could have expected that from a guy with the middle name Hussein?

I was reading Ulsterman looking for dirt on Obama (more on that later) when I came across this interesting comment about the Osama bin Laden raid.

LOAD OF CRAP. The operation “as propagandaized”(?) was impossible for even my military brethren to carry out. Look at the reports.

After the (super secret) UH60L Blackhawk went down they all boarded the other (super secret) Blackhawk Helo. Let’s look at some facts about the Blackhawk:

General characteristics of UH60L Blackhawk Helicopter.

Crew: 2 pilots (flight crew) with 2 crew chiefs/gunners
Capacity: 2,640 lb of cargo internally, including 14 troops or 6 stretchers
Fuselage width: 7 ft 9 inches.

According to WHITEHOUSE reports the second Helo would have to have loaded 4 current crew plus 4 from downed Helo plus 24 or 25 SEAL’s that is a total of 32. Figuring an average weight of 200 pounds per trooper weight 6,400 pounds. Add to that gear plus dead body equals another 3,500 pounds plus dog/ 80 pounds plus collected intel/ 100 pounds. total 10,080 pounds in a Helo that has space for 14 and internal cargo capability for 2,640.

Can you say B as in B and S as in S?

That was bothering me (and that “helicopter” thing that looked more like a big drone - but I'm not up on helo design, those might have been stealth modifications) but I didn’t look up the UH60 specs.

The UH-60 features a four-blade main and tail rotors and is powered by two General Electric T700 turboshaft engines. It has a long, low profile shape to meet the Army's requirement for transporting aboard a C-130 Hercules. It can carry 11 troops with equipment, lift 2,600 lb (1,170 kg) of cargo internally or 9,000 lb (4,050 kg) of cargo (for UH-60L/M) externally by sling

Let us look a bit further - 11 troops with equipment. And yet the raid was reported to have 24 sailors involved.

The operation was carried out by a 24-man platoon from the Naval Special Warfare Developmental group - known as DEVGRU - based out of Dam Neck, Va. It's a group specifically dedicated to high-risk counterterrorism operations and assigned to the Joint Special Ops Command at Ft. Bragg. (It's predecessor was the storied "SEAL Team Six".)

Well maybe not all sailors. But us Navy guys have such reputations as wusses (always getting beat up by Marines) that I thought a little exaggeration was warranted. In case you had wondered about interservice rivalry. Sailors are smarter than Marines. And a few sailors are tougher. OK. Mostly kidding. Semper Fi Mac.

No Jimmy Carter

I know a lot of folks like to compare Obama to Jimmy Carter these days. But compare Jimmy Carter's failed hostage rescue attempt Operation Eagle Claw with Obama's successful killing of Osama. Of course in these matters one must not only be good but also lucky. Now if only economics worked that way as well. Of course Obama is starting out with the handicap of being no good at it. So it is difficult to tell how much luck would avail.

One thing that was done right in the operation was to limit the amount of equipment required for the mission to be a success. Of course there were no hostages to rescue and only one body to bring out. Still, as some wag put it: For the first time in the Obama Presidency I'm proud of my President. And as a Navy Man I must say that I'm very proud of my service today. I'll go with what is flying on every jack staff of the US Navy since 9/11:

Triple Cross: How bin Laden's Master Spy Penetrated the CIA, the Green Berets, and the FBI--and Why Patrick Fitzgerald Failed to Stop Him

Now there is an interesting title. Perhaps there is even some truth to it. No doubt it should provide many hours worth of material to gnaw on.

So how about a review?

While I was deciding how I should start a review of Peter Lance's new book - I remembered a quote from Monica Gabrielle, one of the 9/11 widows, in a documentary about 9/11: "The one thing that I personally was hoping for was another Woodward and Bernstein with regard to 9/11. Someone, anyone that was willing to put their teeth into this."

Well, we have found that person, and his name is Peter Lance. In his third book on the origins of the 9/11 plot and the failures of the FBI and others to stop the attack, Lance focuses on Ali Mohamed - yet another figure relegated to footnotes in the "9/11 Report" who Lance shows played a central role in Al Qaeda's plan of attack. Not only did he help create the "Brooklyn Cell" which supported the 9/11 hijackers, but he wrote the training manual for Al Qaeda and created training camps for hijackers, all while the FBI thought he was on their side as an informant!

The best part of Triple Cross is the way Lance weaves together the different strands of the 9/11 story and enhances them with his own original reporting on each. For example, the book quotes from numerous interviews Lance conducted with Tony Shaffer, Curt Weldon, and other members of the Able Danger team. While not a full history of Able Danger, it has by far the most complete version in any book published to date.

Some have expressed frustration at the delays in publication, but I can attest to the fact that Lance needed the extra time in order to include all of the latest details from the interviews National Geographic conducted for their documentary based on his book, and the latest developments in the Able Danger and Greg Scarpa Jr. scandals. It is a great read, and uncovers a lot of new information about the 9/11 plot.

I was twigged to that book by this Jack Cashill newsletter Libby Prosecutor Threatens Critic. Curiouser and curiouser.

Fitzgerald does not approve of the book’s thesis, a thesis embedded in the original subtitle, “How Bin Laden’s Master Spy Penetrated the CIA, the Green Berets and the FBI – and Why Patrick Fitzgerald Failed to Stop Him.” And he is doing everything he can to prevent the book’s paperback publication.

Fitzgerald’s efforts have caught the unflattering attention of Newsweek, New York Magazine, and even activist librarians.

The book deals specifically with the FBI’s failure to stop the master spy in question, Ali Mohamed, who had infiltrated the Bureau, the CIA and the Green Berets at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Of particular interest to me, Lance details how the Ali Mohamed case intersected with the TWA Flight 800 case, a subject that Lance is not afraid to tackle.

More generally, the book documents the role Southern District New York (SDNY) Fitzgerald played in the war on terror, a war that Lance claims Fitzgerald badly mismanaged before September 11, 2001.

And now I don't know what to think. What is Fitz trying to hide? Why is he trying to get all unsold hardback copies confiscated?

No Price To Pay

The New York Sun reports that a prominent Saudi cleric, Salman al-Awdah, once praised by Osama has turned against him. Howerver, that is not the most interesing point of the article.

Mr. al-Awdah asks, "Have we reduced Islam to a bullet or a rifle? Has the means become an end?"

The editor of an Arabic International Daily, Asharq Alawsat, Tariq Alhomayed, suggested the letter was published too late.

"Sheikh Salman al Ouda's distancing himself from Bin Laden at a time when those absolving themselves of Al Qaeda's leader have nothing to lose and no price to pay." Mr. Alhomayed wrote in an editorial published yesterday. "This comes at a time when no one is shedding any tears for the leader of Al Qaeda organization."

It seems Osama is no longer the hero he once was and the cleric has joined the bandwagon.

Democracy Not Democrats

The new Osama tape has created quite a buzz among Democrats. Here is what one commenter at ABC News/Political Radar has to say:

Democrats Not Following Orders

It seems a new Osama tape has surfaced and bin Laden is really pissed with the Democrats.

"People of America: the world is following your news in regards to your invasion of Iraq, for people have recently come to know that, after several years of tragedies of this war, the vast majority of you want it stopped. Thus, you elected the Democratic Party for this purpose, but the Democrats haven't made a move worth mentioning. On the contrary, they continue to agree to the spending of tens of billions to continue the killing and war there."

Well my Democrat friends, are you going to follow bin Laden's orders or not?

Don Surber says not.

After a month-long vacation, Democrats returned to the nation’s capital this week, an army in disarray. They left in August confident that Republicans would go home, get chewed out about the war, and raise the white flag. Instead, the Surge worked and the Democrats are losing it.

S.A. Miller at the Washington Times reported:

Rank-and-file Democrats in Congress are criticizing the party’s leaders for allowing the White House to sap momentum from the antiwar movement during the August recess.

“The White House is taking great advantage of the Democrats not pushing back,” said Rep. Lynn Woolsey, California Democrat and co-founder of the antiwar Out of Iraq Caucus.

“We need bolder steps from the Democrats,” she said. “The people of this country are waiting for some leadership — some bold leadership — from the people that they elected to be the majority of the House and the Senate.”

It appears that Osama is waiting for that same kind of leadership.

I think it is well past time that the Democrats made up their collective minds and decide whose side are they on.

Not a Victim

There is an ABC report out that US troops may have Osama bin Laden cornered in Afghanistan.

U.S. officials declined to identify who the operation was targeting, but indicated they were after a "High Value Target" (HVT) . Official sources would not rule out that al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden himself was the intended victim. Afghan officials said the target could be another senior ranking al Qaeda leader.

Osama is a terrorist. He is not a victim of American bombs. He is a recipient.
