Security is the only legitimate government expenditure. I'd be fine with being isolationist if the world wasn't full of communists, islamists, and the French. Given that it is, there are lots of people who need killing or at least a credible threat.

I really like that. Don't get me wrong. Lawyers are some of my best friends. But on this one I'm siding with the engineers.How have we come to the point where far too many see law school as a qualifying factor?It has always amazed me that so many people think of lawyers as “smart.”

I worked for many years with engineers — brillant people who sometimes don’t speak with perfect eloquence. But now I spend more time with lawyers — who are all able to communicate beautifully, but usually can’t think their way out of a wet paper bag.
As politicians often say (in private):“There are only two things that matter in the world: perception and reality. And reality doesn’t matter.”
