And if you find the subject of interest you may find this book helpful:

The Great Arab Conquests: How the Spread of Islam Changed the World We Live In

I did find this reviewof the book interesting. Especially his conclusion:
For those Arabs today who mourn the loss of empire and feel humiliation and inferiority at the hands of the West, they would do well to study the lessons of this book. Tolerance of other cultures and religions - not rigidity and exclusion - is the key to greatness and power.
However imperfectly we practice it, tolerance of other cultures and religions is built into the American scheme:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Am I the only one to see that the things you're presenting as evidence ... point in the exact opposite direction ?

Stopping coercion is the thing that just predated the west's fall from grace. Freedom to spread ideologies just preceded the rise of communism, leading to some 800 million dead. Political freedom preceded the largest killings in history : nazism, with some 50 million dead.

Stopping coercion on our part also did not, at all, stop coercion. It just changed the angle. Before the West stopped using direct military power to advance it's goals, it worked to it's advantage. There was a massive expansion of the west. Liberation of millions upon millions from slavery and oppression was something that occured every few months or so.

Then the west stopped using that force. Not out of nobility, in case you are a naive idiot, but mostly for reasons of cost efficiency, and cowardice. Now intolerance and coercion has grown, not shrunk, and now it's working to eradicate the west instead of advancing it.

Intolerance and coercion's big secret : it works. Not that that isn't obvious to every squirrel and his poop, but Americans find some strange way to deny it.

Sure it might not get you to the moon, it will certainly not bring enlightenment ... but, if you're the big man, you get to rape with impunity. And given Darwin's morality ... is there anything greater ?

You need to visit Dubai, Simon, not to go and see arabs holding slaves and raping them ... but to see Americans, Frenchmen, Englishmen (and women. Women are worse than men) do it, and to see them prefering those slaves to their "freedom". Ex-freedom for some of them, of course.

Just my 2c. The thing that

Tom,

I no naive idiot. Just the regular kind.

The American thing has in general been to avoid preemption. To live and let live. etc. We do not want to rule others. That is a very valuable trait.

No matter what people say American power is not feared. Recognized but not feared. Bad in the short run good in the long run.

Take the Palestinians. Of course they hate America. But given the choice of any where in the world to locate what is the #1 Palestinian destination of choice by a wide margin? America.

That is the power of co-opting people's minds and cultures. It is a valuable power. Don't waste it.

We are destroying Islam with drugs, cell phones, the internet, and pornography. The current dust up is their death throes not their advance.

Belmont Club has a good take on all this in The Crisis of Unfaith.

While I think the chance of you being right are not zero, I don't think they're all that high either.

And there are many sticks that could easily get stuck into the rolling wheels of modernizition of the barbarians.

Intolerance and coercion works very well. You should visit some more places around the world, and work there for a bit, and you will understand the many things even tiny bits of coercion can (and do) change. They work especially well on so called "liberal" and modern europeans, I'm sorry to say.
