Non-Compliance

Kofi Annan says that Israel must stop violating the truce to prevent a resumption of the hostilities. As if Hizballah has any fight left.

Then Kofi asks - pretty please - if Israel wouldn't lift the blockade of Lebanon.

Annan also called on Israel to lift the aerial and naval blockade imposed on Lebanon since the beginning of the war. At this time, however, Israel has no intention of complying with the request.
Note in the accompaning photo that Israeli Defence Minister Peretz is grinning from ear to ear and Kofi is trying real hard to force a smile.

Too bad yours is a reading only blog with no pitchers. That Peretz and Coffee photo is begging for a caption contest. Almost enough to make me a Peretz fan. Does Coffee look like he just had an enema and Peretz is delaying his run to the boys room, or is it my imagination?

You know I had a similar thought except I imagined a broomstick.

Simon,
There's an explanation for Coffee's facial expression. The phrase "fixed buffet" is the key. Coffee used it first. Beirut.
Monday, August 28.Visiting Beirut on the first leg of an 11-day Mideast tour, Annan called U.N. resolution 1701 "a fixed menu."

"It's not a buffet ... It's not an a la carte menu where you choose and pick. We have to implement 1701 in its entirety and I hope that all parties will pay attention and act in that spirit," he said in a press conference with Prime Minister Fouad Saniora. "Without the full implementation of resolution 1701, I fear the risk is great for renewal of hostilities."

A day or two later, Olmert picks it up on Coffee's second stop, Jerusalem, publically agrees 100% with Coffee.
Peretz is assigned to escort him through the "fixed buffet" at lunch break, no pickin' an' choosin'. Voila! Photo-op! Coffee doesn't like gefiltefish?

A correction to my last is in order. Change "... publically agrees 100% with Coffee" to pubically agrees with Coffee on the fixed menu idea. But not on lifting the blockade and continuing armed intervention in the face of noncompliance by other parties. Did anyone else notice Coffee used the menu metaphor first? I'm sure Carol did. Maybe I'm just late coming to the table.
