There is a very interesting video on Google by Stephen Wolfram, inventor of Mathematica.
He talks about how simple systems with simple rules can generate very complex results.

Fabulous stuff. I had played around with a moderately high performance C++ version of Life (a cell simulator) in the 90's and played with some Mandelbrot generators earlier. I may have to go dust that code off.
