Glenn Reynolds - No Longer A Libertarian

Let me quote:

no longer being a member of the Libertarian Party
How much more unLibertarian can you get than that?

Glenn claims there is a lot of misunderstanding going on. So I ask you is there?

Just for the record. I'm no longer a Libertarian either.

Just curious -- how did you get added to the aggregator of a self-described "hyperlocal" Nashville community blog, or do you even know?
.

What is this aggregator of which you speak?

Added to a "hyperlocal" blog?

That's enough for me! I'll be back in touch Monday...

Hoping all's well with you and yours, MSimon.

Good first step. Now if you guys could just see the truth, stop being libertarians altogether, and just become regular conservatives...

Small government conservatives are the real conservatives.

Small government is a useful rule of thumb, but not all that useful. It doesn't go very far, certainly not far enough to sustain a political movement.

Libertarianism (both varieties) is merely an ideology.

Conservatism draws from principles.

Conservatism seems messy, philosophically inelegant and full of contradictions, because upholding moral principles is seldom without conflict and never easy.

The libertarian position on a particular issue is easier to arrive at, but being a mere ideology, it's very often incorrect.

Libertarianism is based on principles. Just different ones.

For instance: efforts to enforce certain types of morality lead to black markets and subsidy of criminals.

We learned this from alcohol prohibition. we learned it from the Soviet Union. We learned it from drug prohibition.

What conservatives seem incapable of understanding that prohibited does not mean prohibited. It means distributed by criminals.

And yet the socons go on about prohibiting this and prohibiting that.

It is good to have principles. It is better if they actually match up with reality.

Take the outlawing of abortion. You know for a fact it will create a black market in abortion. Do you in fact want the abortion market controlled by criminals? Wouldn't it be better if women didn't want abortions? No government involvement required.

The gun-control/gun-free-safe-zone Dems ALSO seem to miss this salient feature of 'outlawing' something... ANYthing!
