The miners' unions pretty much killed the industry in the 1940's and 1950's, and the Clean Air Act finished it off in the 80's, since the Illinois seams are all high-sulphur. There's an awful lot of coal reserves still there, but very few mines still in operation.<br /><br />There are even some mine-mouth coal-fired generating stations (built right next to a mine, with a conveyor belt running from the mine to the furnaces) that no longer use coal from the adjacent mine--they bring it in from the Power River Basin.Neilhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01039999711990701720noreply@blogger.com
