Pragmatism.
The party out of power is always pragmatic. They promise to give the voters what they want.
Then once in power they begin by pissing off their most marginal supporters (the I WON syndrome) and keep pissing off those on the edge until they are out of power.
It is the stupidest thing I have ever seen.
