Unacceptable Risk
President Present is running into resistance from the Pentagon over has troop withdrawal plans.
The Times reported that Odierno had "developed a plan that would move slower than Mr. Obama's campaign timetable" and had suggested in an interview "it might take the rest of the year to determine exactly when United States forces could be drawn down significantly."Getting General Petraeus
The opening argument by the Petraeus-Odierno faction against Obama's withdrawal policy was revealed the evening of the January 21 meeting when retired army General Jack Keane, one of the authors of the Bush troop-surge policy and a close political ally and mentor of Petraeus, appeared on the "Lehrer News Hour" to comment on Obama's pledge on Iraq combat troop withdrawal.
Keane, who had certainly been briefed by Petraeus on the outcome of the Oval Office meeting, argued that implementing such a withdrawal of combat troops would "increase the risk rather dramatically over the 16 months."
He asserted that it would jeopardize the "stable political situation in Iraq" and called that risk "not acceptable."
The assertion that Obama's withdrawal policy threatens the gains allegedly won by the Bush troop surge and Petraeus' strategy in Iraq will apparently be the theme of the campaign that military opponents are now planning.
to win the war and then having Mr. Obama give it back to the jihadis does not seem like a good idea.I wonder what Mr. Obama really plans to do? If he gives up Iraq to the enemies of stability he is going to create a lot of other enemies. Not just here at home but also in the Middle East and Europe as well. OTOH there is always the possibility some one is paying him for results.
However, more and more I'm leaning towards the idea that President Present's map of reality and reality significantly diverge. This could lead to problems.

I think that a lot of folks who voted for him, and probably Obama himself as well, believe that the old ways can easily be made to work again if only those dumb Republicans weren't running things. All we had to do was to get somebody smart in the White House, who would sit down and govern things the way a good Democrat can.
Sit down with the Iranians and the Europeans and the Russians and competently hash things out, so we can all go home in peace.
Sit down with those nasty bankers and businesspeople and explain to them how the economy should work.
Sit down with the civil service employees and make government programs functional.
Sit down with those ugly Republicans in Congress and force them to fix entitlements like they should have been doing all along.
Sit down with the military and tell them to shut down this non-existent "Long War" they've been running.
I'm truly afraid of what comes after Obama--after it becomes crystal clear that things just aren't that simple. When it becomes clear that the old ways failed because they no longer suit the times, and trying to bring them back just adds to the pain.
